Consumer BIN Cards
If your cardholders try to use the debit cards at merchants that have registered with Visa and/or Mastercard under the following Merchant Category Codes (MCC), the transaction will fail:
- 4829: Wire Transfers, Money Orders, Money Transfers, International Remittance. To prevent fraud and money laundering, this includes unloading funds from the card to wallets such as Apple Pay or Venmo. However, loading money from these apps to the card is not covered by this MCC, and WILL work.
- 5542: Pay at the Pump Gasoline. This is blocked by most prepaid cards due to high dollar holds placed on the cards, and the potential for overdraft and fraud. Cardholders must pre-pay inside of the gas station, instead of at the pump, which will be submitted under a different MCC.
- 6012: Purchase of merchandise or services at a Mastercard customer financial institution location. Such merchandise and services may include checks and other financial products, promotional merchandise, loan fees, and financial counseling service fees.
- 6051: Quasi Cash Transactions - travelers cheques, foreign currency, money orders, car and other loan repayments, financial account funding, or cryptocurrency transactions.
- 7801: Internet Gambling Transactions - government regulated internet gambling sites and online platforms accepting the placement of wagers.
- 7995: Gambling Transactions - casinos, race tracks, card parlors, lottery tickets, spread betting, in-flight commerce gaming.
Some (or all) types of transaction at the following merchants may be declined because of these MCC restrictions: Wise, Cash App, Western Union, MoneyGram, WorldRemit, Xoom, Venmo, Square, Paypal, Apple Cash, Coinbase, and Crypto.com.
These restrictions are set by the sponsor bank; Hydrogen cannot change them. You, as the Hydrogen customer, are able to set additional card controls on top of the restrictions listed above.
If you would like more information on these MCCs, please view the Mastercard MCC guide here.
